Indonesian Crypto Users Reach 23.21 Million Accounts, OJK Tightens Oversight and Consumer Protection - World

The digital financial assets and crypto industry in Indonesia continues to grow rapidly. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) recorded that the number of consumer accounts for digital financial assets reached 23.21 million in August 2026, indicating an increasing participation of the public in the technology-based investment ecosystem.

However, this growth also presents new challenges. The increasing number of consumer accounts makes the need for investor protection, transaction security, information transparency, and regulatory certainty more important than ever.

These issues were among the discussions at Bali Tech Week, on Monday, October 19, 2026, which brought together regulators and players in the digital asset industry.

The OJK emphasized that industry growth should not only be measured by the number of users or transaction values. Market sustainability also requires strong governance and consistent consumer protection.

OJK Records 23.21 Million Digital Asset Consumer Accounts

According to OJK data, the number of consumer accounts at Digital Financial Asset Traders (PAKD) reached 23.21 million in August 2026.

This number increased 1.23% compared to July 2026, when the total number of consumer accounts was recorded at 22.93 million.

This means there was an addition of about 280 thousand accounts in one month.

This growth shows that public interest in digital asset trading continues amid changing global crypto market conditions.

However, the number of accounts does not always equate to the number of individual users.

One person can have accounts on more than one platform, so this figure is more accurately understood as the number of consumer accounts recorded in the trading ecosystem.

Nevertheless, the scale of 23.21 million accounts reflects the industry's significant responsibility in maintaining user security and trust.

Indonesian Crypto Transactions Reach IDR 23.16 Trillion

The growth in consumer accounts is also accompanied by an increase in crypto asset trading activity.

The OJK recorded that the value of crypto asset transactions in August 2026 reached IDR 23.16 trillion.

This figure increased 12.87% month-on-month compared to July, which was IDR 20.52 trillion.

The increase in transaction value indicates that trading activity remains active despite the volatility in the crypto market.

On the other hand, transactions of digital financial asset derivatives experienced even higher growth.

The value of derivative transactions reached IDR 4.56 trillion in August 2026, up 33.76% compared to July, which was IDR 3.41 trillion.

This development shows that products in the digital asset industry are becoming increasingly diverse.

However, the increase in derivative activity also raises the need for risk education, especially since some derivative products have more complex characteristics compared to spot trading.

Consumer Protection Becomes the Main Challenge for the Crypto Industry

The Deputy Director of Technology Innovation Development in the Financial Sector, Digital Financial Assets, and Crypto Assets at OJK, Satrio Nugroho, emphasized the importance of balancing innovation and consumer protection.

In the Bali Tech Week discussion, Satrio stated that industry growth must be built on trust, accountability, and public understanding of the opportunities and risks of crypto assets.

This perspective shows that regulators are not only focused on business development but also on the quality of user protection.

When the number of accounts reaches tens of millions, the potential losses due to fraud, system failures, or lack of investment understanding can affect an increasing number of consumers.

Therefore, oversight needs to cover the entire service process, from user registration, asset storage, transaction execution, to complaint handling.

Consumer protection also requires transparency of information regarding costs, product risks, and platform usage terms.

OJK Encourages Transparency and Financial Literacy

One of the main challenges in the crypto industry is the gap in understanding between service providers and consumers.

Some new users may be attracted to buy digital assets due to the potential for high profits.

However, not all users understand the risks of price volatility, loss of account access, investment fraud, or technical risks in using digital assets.

Therefore, increasing literacy is an important part of consumer protection.

Education needs to not only explain how to buy and sell Bitcoin or other crypto assets.

Users also need to understand the difference between spot and derivative trading, asset storage mechanisms, and how to identify suspicious investment offers.

In addition, platform providers need to provide clear and easily understandable information, including regarding transaction costs, liquidation risks, and withdrawal procedures.

With this approach, the growth in the number of accounts can be accompanied by an increase in the quality of consumer understanding.
