Ethereum: Vitalik Buterin entrusts his ENS to an AI agent and sets a two-year goal
Five minutes, a locally running AI agent, and Vitalik Buterin's ENS is updated without him opening any interface. The co-founder of Ethereum shared this on October 6, 2026, in Singapore, on the stage of OKX NOW.
He draws a thesis from this: AI is becoming the gateway to blockchain. He had already presented his vision of a merger between Ethereum and AI. This time, he adds a two-year horizon. It remains to read what he really said. Indeed, the phrase "applications will disappear" does not appear in the transcript. Key points from this article:
- Vitalik Buterin presented a vision where AI becomes the main interface for interacting with the blockchain, replacing traditional interfaces.
- He highlighted the risks associated with AI agents, such as prompt injection, while mentioning the need to secure interactions with emerging standards like ERC-8004.
A local AI agent instead of the ENS interface
The ENS (Ethereum Name Service) is the directory that associates a readable name with an address. It is usually managed from a web application, with its menus and signatures. However, Vitalik Buterin did without it. "About a month ago, I updated my ENS for the first time without any traditional interface," he explained according to the transcript published by ChainCatcher. Indeed, an AI agent running on his own machine wrote the script for him. Duration of the operation: about five minutes.
His conclusion can be summed up in one sentence: "more and more often, AI will become the new UI." In other words, the new user interface. The principle is simple. You say what you want, the agent chooses the operations and sends them to the blockchain. So no more menus or buttons.
Two years: what Vitalik Buterin really announced
The statement was quickly summarized as "the end of applications." However, the discourse is more measured. In two years, Vitalik Buterin describes a network where a large number of transactions can be carried out. Costs would be "much lower than today," with better privacy.
He then adds two observations. When you trade today, your counterparty is likely already a bot, and this will become increasingly common. Finally, in two years, "even the application itself could be written by bots."
Cryptobriefing, which covers the same event, notes this conditional: traditional on-chain applications "could decline." So there is no question of disappearance. Moreover, none of the reports consulted quantify the forecast. Neither the share of the applications concerned nor the volume of transactions.
Prompt injection, Safe, and silicon: the downside of the agent
Vitalik Buterin did not sell only dreams. He recalled the attack against Safe, one of the largest crypto wallets. It resulted in approximately $1.4 billion in losses. The target of the attack, according to Cryptobriefing: the layer of interaction with the user, the weak point of current interfaces.
But replacing the interface with an agent does not eliminate the risk; it shifts it. Vitalik Buterin himself raises the question of prompt injection. This refers to a malicious instruction hidden in content that the agent reads, which diverts its mission. Cryptobriefing cites two other dangers mentioned. First, the erosion of privacy as AI manages more activity. Second, the compromise of an agent that signs transactions.
His response goes down to the hardware, with a phrase: "Not your silicon, not your keys." That is to say, "not your silicon, not your keys." Indeed, without control of the chip running the agent, the private key only belongs to you in theory. He also bets on zero-knowledge proofs, which allow proving a fact without revealing all the information. This line is consistent with his recent positions. On one hand, securing the code through AI and formal verification. On the other hand, limiting the autonomy of AI even at the cost of losing efficiency.
The groundwork is also being laid on the standards side. ERC-8004, titled "Trustless Agents," is still in draft form. It envisions three on-chain registers for identity, reputation, and validation of autonomous agents. Finally, its authors come from MetaMask, the Ethereum Foundation, Google, and Coinbase.
The goal is thus set for autumn 2028. Until then, Vitalik Buterin's forecast remains conditional. Moreover, he himself left the question of prompt injection open.
