Democrats in the U.S. Investigate Meta's Tax Credit Applications
Democratic senators on the U.S. Senate Finance Committee have expressed concerns that Meta may be abusing research and development tax credits and are demanding an explanation from the company regarding its application for these tax incentives in the construction of data centers. The senators are scrutinizing whether Meta improperly applied for this policy, which is intended to support research and experimental technologies, rather than subsidizing routine business expenses. Previous reports indicated that Meta utilized this credit to reduce its tax liabilities by billions of dollars. Chief Democratic senator Ron Wyden and six other senators stated in a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg that federal R&D tax credits should support an innovative economy, and subsidizing the construction of artificial intelligence data centers does not meet the criteria, potentially constituting an improper application of federal tax law that warrants further investigation. The letter was signed by Wyden and the other six Democratic members, and Vermont Senator Peter Welch also wrote to the IRS requesting information on Meta and other large tech companies' use of R&D tax credits.
