David Schwartz Explains Risks of XRPL After Slowdown

A technical glitch that led to a slowdown in transactions on the XRP Ledger network has prompted a broader examination of the protocol's architecture. David Schwartz, Ripple's former technology director and one of the system's developers, discussed the network's notable vulnerabilities in a public assessment following the incident.

Slow Ledger Closures Prompted Investigation

The issue emerged when the XRP Ledger Operations team recorded an anomaly on the network. The noticeably slower closure of ledgers on the network prompted engineers to investigate the source of the delay. During this process, questions about the resilience of the decentralized structure within the community also arose.

Schwartz stated that the XRPL software is protected by a multi-layered security structure. However, he pointed out that there are two fundamental scenarios that could completely halt the entire network. The first scenario involves a simultaneous failure of numerous validator servers worldwide. Schwartz noted that such a situation could only be deemed possible in the event of a major natural disaster on a global scale.

The second scenario was identified as a potential error in the consensus algorithm or a disruption at the code level of one of the protocol's core functions. Schwartz expressed that the recorded slowdown in rounds during the recent incident indicated a narrowing of the system's technological security margin, which could point to a targeted attack or a hidden bug triggered within the code.

David Schwartz emphasized that the possibilities that could paralyze the entire network are limited to massive infrastructure loss or a breakdown of the consensus mechanism, while the recent slowdown indicates a decrease in the security margin.

Responding to Claims of a Single Point of Failure

Schwartz also rejected claims that the network is dependent on a single node or center. He stated that the XRPL operates in a completely decentralized manner, asserting that the shutdown of a major center, or even his own node, or its overload would not directly affect the overall operability of the network.

Ripple, as one of the leading companies in the XRP ecosystem, develops payment infrastructures and blockchain-based financial solutions. The XRP Ledger is known as an open-source blockchain network that operates independently of Ripple.

Monitoring Systems Struggled Under Load

During the incident, it became apparent that the most concrete issue was the weakness of the network monitoring systems under heavy load. When consensus rounds slowed down, validators suddenly switched to maximum load. Schwartz's own node could not withstand the intense request traffic and local RPC connections got stuck in CLOSE_WAIT status.

Mini glossary: RPC is a communication method that allows a software to request data and execute commands remotely from another system. CLOSE_WAIT refers to a situation where a connection has received a closure signal from the other side, but the local side has not yet completed the process.

Due to this freeze, Schwartz's internal monitoring system failed to record and transmit diagnostic data at the most critical moment. The engineer had to restart the server without clarifying the exact cause of the malfunction.

Schwartz reported that the diagnostic data was lost at the most critical moment due to the freezing of connections on his node, and the server was restarted without seeing exactly what caused the issue.

Records Sent to Old Test Server Under Investigation

During the investigation, it was also revealed that the central log records belonging to one of the XRPL developers were sent to an old test host of the XRP Ledger Foundation. This situation further complicated the complete collection of data during the incident.

The engineering team and community operators are manually reviewing the remaining log records to isolate the error. Schwartz noted that although there was a temporary narrowing of the security margin, the team kept the situation under control and that the network architecture has sufficient technical reserves to continue functioning.
