Central Bank of Russia Approves Sberbank's Registration as a Cryptocurrency Exchange and Trading Service Provider
Sberbank Approved for Cryptocurrency Exchange Registration and Trading Services
The Central Bank of Russia has officially approved the provision of cryptocurrency exchange services by Sberbank, the country's largest financial institution, under the new digital asset regulations.
As a result, the regulatory authority has added Sberbank to the list of licensed cryptocurrency exchange operators, advancing access to the cryptocurrency market in compliance with regulations. Prior to this approval, Sberbank had also completed its registration as a digital depository to manage records of cryptocurrency holdings and digital rights.
According to the bank's announcement, this approval allows customers to utilize existing digital banking platforms they are familiar with to access cryptocurrency-related services. The first services are scheduled to launch on December 1, maintaining a user-friendly interface for users.
Expanding Licensed Operators and Russia's New Legal Framework
The development of the cryptocurrency market in Russia is progressing rapidly. The law concerning digital currencies and digital rights, which came into effect on September 1, has clarified specific rules regarding the trading, storage, and provision of financial services related to cryptocurrencies.
Under this new legal framework, an environment has been established where licensed exchanges, brokers, custodians, and digital asset storage institutions can operate legally.
Currently, the register of cryptocurrency exchange operators published by the Central Bank of Russia includes a total of eight organizations, including Sberbank, VTB Bank, and T-Invest Lab, which is part of the T-Technologies group that also includes T-Bank.
On the other hand, the register of digital depositories lists five operators, including VTB Bank and Atomyze, with these two registration systems serving different roles. Exchange operators facilitate the buying and selling of digital currencies, while depositories handle the recording and management of ownership rights.
Simplified Application Procedures and Future Market Outlook
The Central Bank began accepting related license applications on October 5. For some existing financial institutions and operators, registration can be completed with just a one-business-day notification, providing simplified procedures to facilitate market entry.
This series of legal developments and licensing movements aligns with the plans of traditional financial institutions to offer regulated cryptocurrency products and services. For example, the Moscow Exchange has also announced plans to start cryptocurrency trading in December following the introduction of the new law. Moving forward, an environment will be fully operational where investors can trade cryptocurrencies safely and legally through licensed intermediaries, subject to established eligibility criteria and trading restrictions.
